One of the things which makes me cringe when I contemplate the future of the Libertarian party is the stranglehold that anarchist leftists have on much of the party direction, epitomized by hand wringing knee-jerk opposition to the party in power. And the Liberaltarians over at Lew Rockwell never fail to disappoint me with their mental gymnastics to arrive at an anti-liberty position but still frame it as pro-liberty.

“Liberaltarian” is a word I am coining right now. Badda-boom, badda-bing, it’s done. Since I’m inventing it, I get to define it.

A Liberaltarian is from that branch of the party which is more concerned with keeping their dope cheap, and not being drafted. They tend to see the word through rose colored glasses, and are utopianists to the extreme (but when pressed for any details on their plan to bring about this utopia, always seem to babble on about pie-in-the-sky things like “transformation of the universal gestalt” or other metaphysical nonsense rather than have any actual ideas.). Ideally, they’d love to be anarchists, as the haven’t quite grown out of the grade school mindset of “You’re not the boss of me!”

These people hate any government, but their ideal society would have no rules except that you could make no rules, but they’d somehow manage to enforce this as individuals against the larger collectives which would spring up. And being pacifists, no violence or threat of force would be used. Until after they were shot and killed.

Yeah, these are the folk who would scold you for “coercing” your mugger with force because he hadn’t actually shot at you yet, but only pointed the gun and threatened you. And if you talked to him enough and offered to buy something from him, or sell it to him, he’d see sweet reason and sit down and have a beer with you. And even though they hate the idea of “government” ownership of people, they have no problem with corporate ownership of people. As if somehow changing the hand that holds the key to their slave collar makes it all better. (That’s the anarcho-capitalist version of this, the “If you leave big business alone and let them run free they’ll magically become good citizens and never use their power or wealth for evil” crowd. Of course, they scoff and deny that Corporations will have no restrictions that would allow them to endanger liberty, but ask them to name even one and they change the subject rather quickly.)

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Anarchists of any stripe have no business in a political party. And any party who finds such an infestation would be smart to have their bouncers toss them right briskly over the side of their ship.

Despite the lip service paid, Leftists are the worst possible bedfellow for anyone with libertarian tendancies, as even a casual examination of things where they hold sway will reveal. Speech codes are the worst, put the left firmly in charge and kiss the first - and SECOND - amendments good-fuckin’-bye. And let’s not forget their love affair with socialism and fascination with confiscatory tax rates.

Government may not be a necessary evil, but it is by Jesus an unavoidable one, and instead of pining around like a bunch off moonbats for an anarchist paradise which will never occur so long as three humans remain to draw breath, Lew Rockwell and his band of nutjobs would be well advised to figure out how to actually get Libertarians elected with concrete plans rather than rambling criticisms of the party in power just for the sake of being the opposition.

I have tried to avoid the whole Terry Schiavo issue, because it seems way overdone, and a thing addressed by far more able raconteurs than my poor self. When, however, I hear the usual litany from leftists about “Rightwingreligiouszealotswhowantatheocracy” and “Theresnononreligiousreasonforhernottodie” than I have to weigh in.

(Yeah, I ran the words together on purpose, mainly because they are rote, parroted talking points which are the latest trendy fad for leftists to utter.)

I have a simple solution for the whole Terri Schiavo issue. Take a pillow, go into her room, and hold it over her face. If she struggles for air, she wants to live. If not, well, you’re just “withholding oxygen” from her.

I can hear it now. “Jesus, Gonzo, that’s just horrible!”

Yeah – and, what? Withholding food and water is any different? It is actively, through what the more theologically inclined might say, committing murder by omission. If one wants to survive, the basic necessities are food, water, and air. If you keep the first two away, why not the third? Hell, why not a shot in the arm of cyanide? Why not just sprout a pair and go in there and use a 44 magnum. It’ll be sure that way.

What if I were to walk into the Florida Hospice where Terri is, take out my 10mm pistol, and empty the clip into Terri Schiavo? Would I be a murderer?

Why?

I mean, Terri is insensate, right? She’s not there, right? She has no feeling, right? There’s no consciousness, right? How can you be cruel to her? How can you be cruel to a lump of meat? If the lights are on, and nobody is home, it’s no harm, no foul.

As I write this, Terri has been without food or water for a week. So let’s not mince words. Measures are being taken which will go beyond merely not providing extraordinary measures such as artificial breathing or an artificial heartbeat. Measures are being taken to actively hasten her death. Mercy Killing. The State Courts of Florida are unwilling to undo what a lower court has ruled to maintain their Imperial Judiciary. Federal Courts and the Supreme Court have declined to review the decision. Legislatures have locked, and despite the best efforts of George Bush, the Republican Congress, and Jeb Bush, the deathwatch is on for Terri Schiavo as armed thugs stand outside her door to insure that the sentence is carried out.

Euthanasia. The termination of a life. It’s now legal. We’re just waiting for the arguments on what methods we are going to use. Time to let Jack Kevorkian out of his cage, and let the Hemlock Society begin their partying.

Now, were there to be a document, something beyond the hearsay of her husband, to say in Terri’s own words “I do not want to live like this,” well, it would be a different thing. We do not have that, incontrovertibly, in Terri’s own words. We have the say so of a far from disinterested 3rd party, who said that she said that. Would that be suicide? Maybe – but, that’s a moral and “religious” argument, and Go…er, Nothing Forbid I offend the Militant and Evangelical secularists among the Anti-Religious Left.

Now many people might be saying “Gonz, as a Men’s Activist, how can you be for trampling on Michael Schiavo’s “rights?” As a Libertarian, how can you justify the expansion of government power to intervene, or to trample State’s Rights?” And they are good questions.

First, I hold marriage not to be a property right. I don’t believe wives should own or have a lien on their husband’s self or property, and that should go both ways. I’m not a feminist. I’ll leave “Equality for me, but not for thee” to them. If a woman doesn’t own me, I have no wish to be their master in turn. Running my own damn life is a full time job for the Gonzman, and being my sister’s keeper pays lousy and has equally bad retirement benefits. Besides, one the main focus of my quibbles with feminazism and the modern chivalry is NOT being responsible for someone else’s life.

Pass.

Michael Schiavo plain hasn’t been a good husband to Terri. If the roles were reversed, those of us in the Men’s Movement would be heaping scorn on Terri about having two adulterine bastards while her husband lay in a coma, let alone the scores of other niggling little questions about his motivations. I’m about equality, I don’t believe in the institution of marriage anymore because things like “In sickness and in health” or “For richer or for poorer” and “For better or for worse” and “As long as you both shall live” don’t mean squat, they are dismissed when they become inconvenient to some woman’s sense of “fulfillment.” I don’t know about you, but I certainly hope that the American male can aspire to more than being given the same license to behave badly that women have today. Michael Schiavo doesn’t get a pass because he’s a man. I’ll leave it to the Feminuts to give the Susan Smiths of the world passes based on their plumbing, but I’m better than that gang of hags at the N.O.W.

The second isn’t as tricky as it looks. Plainly stated, I do not want anyone but me, and me alone, to have any say or control over whether my “quality of life” is up to their standard of “Should the Gonzmeister be allowed to live?” I don’t want a judge, or a legislature, or an executive to have that power to say no; absent a declaration by me, I want their hands tied to say yes.

But, and I cannot repeat this enough, we have by default legalized euthanasia, and given into the hands of black-robed jackboots the power to determine whose life is worth living or not. And I am certain that there are many reading this convinced I’m using a slippery slope argument, and being alarmist. To you I ask: “When is the last time you ever saw the government handing back power it had seized?”

Slippery slope? Maybe – but if those who have been around long enough to remember Karen Ann Quindlan will fire up the Way-Back machine of their mind, those who were opposed to pulling her plug argued passionately that once that was allowed, the next step would be keeping food and water away from the comatose and brain damaged. “Piffle!” said their opponents, “Balderdash! Never happen!” It was said that America still respected life, and that such a thing would be far different, and tantamount to murder.

Heh. Prophets in our own time. And they said such things ended in the Old Testament. Fancy that.

As cold and hard as it sounds, even if Terri Schiavo didn’t want to life this way, that’s just too damn bad for her for not having a living will. Her failure to make these wishes known is her tough luck. Part of freedom means being responsible for yourself, and being responsible means doing these things, or else society will adopt the defaults. Fail to leave a will? We have formulas for division of your estate. Fail to fill out a donor card? Your kidneys get buried with you.

So there’s your “Non-Religious” answer, you smug, self-righteous, left wing rat-bastards. When I ask myself whether the society I want embraces life as the default, or death, it’s a no brainer. I pick the Culture of Life over the Culture of Death every time.
