I’ve been taken to task (oh horrors.) by a feminut whose thesis is it’s “unfair” for me to categorize and label feminists with a broad sweep of a brush.

Two words. Hog. Swallop.

Feminists, like other leftists, have this big tendancy to get all huffy and bewail and bemoan categorizing and rubricizing people. Yeah, buddy. I do note that you’re not above lumping all “MRA’s” into one big category though. More “Equality for me and not for thee.” When it’s convenient to categorize people to take potshots for you, fine and dandy. When the rounds coming back start spraying shrapnel in your position, though, you feel somehow ill-used.

Look - it is eminently fair to lump people into general groups which fit a definition of their beliefs and/or practices. If I say Homosexual, I speak of people who have sex with members of the same sex. If I say Lesbian, I narrow that to specifically women who have sex with women. It’s fair, and more importantly, it’s accurate.

I may not be a “right winger” in the same way that, say, William F. Buckley or Charles Colson is - but - we are still on the right hand side of the aisle. I have far more in common with them then I do with JesseJackson; in many respects it is fair to say that our opposition to the policies the “Reverend” Jesse “I will have an affair with someone while counseling Slick Willie about his peccadillos” Jackson advocates is one thing we hold in common, though our routes for arriving at that position may vary.

While one may certainly argue that feminism comes in many flavors, there are several coherent elements of it which all feminists hold in common; moral superiority of women, women as a victim class, more stuff for women at the expense of men, and a certain disdain for masculinity, just to name a few. These common elements may be present in differing degrees, but if one espouses most of them, well, you might just be a feminist. Chances are if you feel annoyed that someone points out and excoriates feminists, and you feel personally attacked, you are one. (And you are being personally attacked.)

The big objection feminists and other leftists object to is being identified for what they are. Hey. Look, I feel no embarassment in being categorized as a right-winger, or MRA, mainly, because I am. If I felt ashamed, I should rethink my positions and affiliations. If one objects to being called a left-wing whack-job or Femerrhoid asshat, well, that’s probably because inwardly you know that you SHOULD be ashamed, and you have something to be ashamed about.

It’s really that simple.
