I have to disagree for the reason that unless morality is a universal, it is meaningless. Without a “X is always wrong” - when it becomes good for you, and bad for me, that is not morality. Universal natural laws depend on a lawgiver, with enough power and authority to declare them. (And a universal human gestalt is just as mystical) Religion may not be required, but a god of some sorts is.

Mr Schwartz makes the error that if a person isn’t moral, they are immoral - no, not true, they may be amoral. They may be ethical, decent, honest and all manner of things. But Morality without universiality is mental masturbation, and can only reasonably derive from a God.

I’m neither Mormon or Pagan, as any longtime reader of this Blog knows; I am in fact a traditionalist Catholic who frequents Latin Masses. So I don’t believe a thing that either of these groups profess, and in fact, I think they are dead wrong theologically. But.

BOTH of these things stink to high heaven.

The first is a transparent attempt to go after someone for the content of their beliefs via a back door. It’s rotten. Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff should be horsewhipped, tarred and feathered, and disbarred. That a scant few disaffected members with an axe to grind constitute reliable testimony to go after people and put a whole religion under state control makes me shudder.

Excuses aside, it’s plain and clear, and has been for a long time, that the content of their beliefs is what is making the FCJCLDS a target. And it’s sick.

Bad as that is, though, were it within my power, Marion County Superior Court Judge Cale Bradford would be tried and executed for High Treason. Loathesome is the only word I can find for the outrageous ruling he made. It flies in the face of any semblance of respect for the constitution. You cannot tell parents that they cannot peaceably instruct their children in whatever faith they see fit. it is WRONG. It is a great evil. It is reprehensible, inexcusable, and un-American.

“Judge” Bradford has decided, though, since they are divorcing, even though they are in accord on the issue, that he has the right to dictate to them how they must behave, what they can do, how they shall instruct their child - and I have to ask, if the mother had custody, would he be sticking his nose in like he is?

I recently had a first-hand lesson in the unintended consequences of government regulation. As the reader probably knows, unintended consequences are the unconsidered effects of regulation. Or, as Lowell Gallaway put it, “a failure to take into account behavioral responses in structuring public policy [which] leads to results that are often the opposite of what the rhetoric of the public policy debate suggests will happen.”

My wife received this letter with much better humor than did I.

Lucky man. Wives generally react to claims of fathering some other woman’s child while you are married to them with very poor humor. Much like men who find out the baby they have been hoping for - or paying for - is the pool boy’s.

I called the Office and spoke with the Child Support Division representative. Politely, I explained that, although I was native of Louisiana, I had been living in Alabama and Florida for nearly ten years and had only just returned. I then suggested that perhaps they had me confused with another Robert Blackstock as I had no knowledge whatsoever of the accusing mother.

At this point I broke down and hired a lawyer.

Which would have been my first step.

The lawyer listened to my story and told me that he had these cases all the time. Here’s how the system works: a non-married mother applies for aid in one of Louisiana’s myriad wealth distribution offices, perhaps welfare. The State then asks the mother the name of the child’s (or children’s) father. This is a requirement for receiving aid in Louisiana. The State then seizes the money from the recalcitrant father.

This approach, sadly, is too simple for the State. So, DNA testing, it was.

Again, my attorney warned me; “If you take the test and you are the father, you’ll have to pay for the tests. If you are not the father, the State pays for the test.”

Never punished in any way whatsoever. Yep. Go ahead and be bad, rotten, unethical, immoral - we’ll indemnify you against any consequence for it. It’s your RIGHT, so it’s right.

The D.A.’s office agreed to our demands and sent a letter ordering me to appear at the Lincoln Parish Civic Center for DNA testing on January 3, 2005 at 10am. I did so and, luckily, had the technician sign and date my order so that I would have some proof that testing had occurred.

At this point, I had a proverbial aneurism.

An armed man. Remember this when men speak as if they have been robbed. People with guns enforce this, and will shoot you. Without the badge, they are no different than a mugger, especially when this is unjust.

Once again I had to call the attorney’s office (did I mention that the attorney cost $175 an hour and that they charge their clients in 15 minute increments and that even a 2 minute call would cost me $43.75?). By now, my case had been kicked up to the senior partner in the firm who began calling the Assistant D.A. himself and demanding some competency.

Competency? If they were competant, they’d be working in real life, not for da gubbmint. Those who can, do. Those who can’t go on the Government’s payroll. It’s easier than thinking.

Finally, the right hand and the left found each other in Tangipahoa Parish (accidentally, I’m sure) and sent us the lab results proving that I am no “baby’s daddy.” Furthermore, I received a final bill from my attorneys (that’s right; it’s now plural) for nearly $1500.

Which brings me back to the subject of this diatribe: unintended consequences.

As in the law thereof.

I’m sure that the politicians in Louisiana had very good intentions when they wrote the current rules concerning welfare. If a man causes a woman to become pregnant and a child results, then that man must help pay to support the child.

Ever notice, amigos, how “good intentions” is a recurrent theme?

Unfortunately, the law was written with no regard as to what will happen if a mother a) doesn’t know who the father is, or b) has no intention of actually naming the father. No punishment will ever be handed down to the mother because that would “hurt the children.” The result is that I (and I’m sure many others like me) end up paying large fees to attorneys in order to be protected from the State.

And that “For the Chilllllllllllldren!” and “Good of the child” is a perennial excuse for abuses of liberty and removal of rights?

This is $1500 that is no longer available to my wife and I for savings, a summer vacation, or whatever other plan we might have had.

$1500 to fend off a false allegation of paternity. And the state or the mommy on a fishing trip will never, or never be required, to pay that back.

Bad behavior with state sanction and no consequences. License to be bad. And we wonder why so many women think it is their privilege to do so.

And so, as I sit here writing out a check to my attorneys, I glance up at my calendar and notice that April 15th is rapidly approaching. With that in mind, let me just say to all my masters in DC and Baton Rouge… thanks for nothing.

Amen to that, brother. Amen to that.

They don’t care if it is against the law, they will do it anyway, and continue to do it until they have their ears nailed to the wall on it.

And the last line ”But our intent was always a good one.” There’s something about such smug, smarmy, officiousness that just makes you want to put a boot in their face.

I’m not blogging on the substance of the story, though if she’s in America legally, Gold Star is losing a lot of ground to stand on.

When a man does it, though, he’s an “abandoner of his children” and “irresponsible” and a “deadbeat.”

Well, okay, he is. He knew the job was dangerous when he took it. BUT SO DID THESE WOMEN, dammit!

Another double standard, another set of excuses, and more of society teaching women “It’s okay to have no morals, bad behavior is *right* for you, Princess! You go grrrrl!”

Here’s an example set for these women’s daughters, and then twenty years from now we’re going to have to listen to THEM whine about how horrible it is that men would sooner gargle with Drano than get involved with them.

If you want to write about groups which tend to ascribe saintliness due to sexual plumbing, you might look at groups who do things like start a defense fund for one of their own who drowns her five kids, and begins to look for ways to blame her husband. They’re called feminists.

It takes 51 votes in the senate to approve a federal judgeship.

However, Senate Democrats are bitching “Unconstitutional!” to not close debate with a supermajority that is not required in order to approve those judges. IOW, it is perfectly logical for 41 people to block a vote on a judge that it only requires 51 to approve.

Yeah. Sure. You betcha. More and more this “Rights of the minority” seems to be the right not to lose. Bullshit.

Outrage aside, let’s take a look at what the fruits of such tactics are - which actually do have a silver lining.

When groups like this begin causing massive amounts of property damage, as well as injury, and credible threats of violence or death, it becomes more and more reasonable for someone to say that such groups present a real, clear, and present danger to someone’s life, property, and well being.

Since such groups operate as cells, and one can’t be sure who is a member or not, and since they engage in criminal behavior, it becomes, then, reasonable for such places as testing labs to shoot intruders on sight - such intruders may be cell members of a known terrorist group, engaging in criminal activity, and with violent tendencies.

This includes weekend activists, you know, the college students who might be contemplating something as simple as tagging “Meat Stinks” on the walls of a slaughterhouse with spray paint.

Good Job, ALF. Some of us have been looking for an excuse to bust a cap in the ass of some of these flannel-mouthed Vegan whack-jobs, and you have just given it to us. Where do we send your MVP award to?
